Proposizioni Finali (Purpose Clauses)

The Lesson

What Are Purpose Clauses?

Purpose clauses (proposizioni finali) explain why an action is done — they express the goal or intention. Italian has several ways to form them depending on whether the subjects of the main and subordinate clauses are the same or different.

Same Subject: per + Infinitive

When both clauses share the same subject, use 'per' followed by the infinitive. This is by far the most common structure. Example: Studio per imparare l'italiano. (I study in order to learn Italian.) The subject of 'studio' and 'imparare' is the same (io), so 'per + infinitive' is used.

per + Infinitive Examples

  • Studio per imparare.I study in order to learn.
  • Vado in palestra per tenermi in forma.I go to the gym to stay in shape.
  • Ha lavorato molto per comprare la casa.He worked hard to buy the house.
  • Mangiamo per vivere, non viviamo per mangiare. We eat to live, we don't live to eat.
  • Parto presto per non fare tardi.I'm leaving early so as not to be late.

Different Subjects: affinché / perché + Congiuntivo

When the two clauses have different subjects, you must use a conjunction followed by the congiuntivo. The most common options are: 'affinché' (formal/literary), 'perché' (neutral, very common), and 'in modo che' (neutral). Note: 'perché' can mean both 'because' (+ indicativo) and 'so that' (+ congiuntivo) — the mood distinguishes the meaning.

affinché / perché + Congiuntivo Examples

  • Ti spiego tutto affinché tu capisca.I explain everything to you so that you understand.
  • Parlo lentamente perché tu possa seguire.I speak slowly so that you can follow.
  • Ha lasciato la luce accesa perché i bambini non avessero paura. He left the light on so the children wouldn't be afraid.
  • Scrivo piano affinché tutti possano leggere.I write slowly so that everyone can read.
  • L'insegnante ripete in modo che gli studenti capiscano. The teacher repeats so that the students understand.

perché: indicativo vs congiuntivo

SentenceMood after perchéMeaning
Non vengo perché sono stanco.indicativoI'm not coming because I'm tired. (cause)
Ti chiamo perché tu venga.congiuntivoI'm calling you so that you come. (purpose)
Studia perché vuole passare l'esame.indicativoHe studies because he wants to pass. (cause)
Studia perché tu possa imparare.congiuntivoHe studies so that you can learn. (purpose)

in modo da vs in modo che

'In modo da' is used with the same subject and is followed by the infinitive. 'In modo che' is used with different subjects and is followed by the congiuntivo. Example: Ho parlato piano in modo da farmi capire. (same subject) vs. Ho parlato piano in modo che tutti capissero. (different subjects)

Negative Purpose

  • Parto presto per non fare tardi.I'm leaving early so as not to be late.
  • Abbassa la voce per non svegliare il bambino.Lower your voice so as not to wake the child.
  • Studio molto affinché non si dica che sono pigro.I study a lot so that no one says I'm lazy.
  • Parla chiaro perché non ci siano malintesi.Speak clearly so there are no misunderstandings.

Key Rule to Remember

The golden rule: SAME subject → per + infinitive. DIFFERENT subjects → affinché/perché/in modo che + congiuntivo. When you see 'perché', check the mood of the verb that follows: indicativo = 'because' (cause), congiuntivo = 'so that' (purpose).
