Condizionale Passato (Past Conditional)

The Lesson

What Is the Condizionale Passato?

The condizionale passato (past conditional) expresses what would have happened under certain conditions that did not occur. It is formed with the present conditional of avere or essere plus the past participle. In English it corresponds to 'would have + past participle': Sarei venuto — I would have come. Avrei studiato — I would have studied.

Formation: avere vs essere

Three Main Uses

The condizionale passato has three key uses. (1) Unfulfilled past condition — describing what would have happened if a past condition had been met (used with the congiuntivo trapassato in the se-clause): Se avessi studiato, avresti superato l'esame (If you had studied, you would have passed the exam). (2) Future-in-the-past — reporting what someone said would happen (in indirect speech when the main verb is past): Ha detto che sarebbe venuto (He said he would come). (3) Polite past wishes — expressing a desire or request about the past in a softened way: Avrei voluto un caffè (I would have liked a coffee); Sarei rimasto di più (I would have stayed longer).

Common Examples

  • Se avessi saputo, sarei venuto. If I had known, I would have come.
  • Ha promesso che avrebbe chiamato. He promised he would call.
  • Avrei preferito restare a casa.I would have preferred to stay home.
  • Senza di te, non avrei capito niente.Without you, I would not have understood anything.
  • Mi avrebbe aiutato, ma era occupato. He would have helped me, but he was busy.
  • Avrebbero vinto se non avessero sbagliato. They would have won if they hadn't made mistakes.
  • Sarebbe stata una bella serata. It would have been a lovely evening.
  • Ti avrei chiamato, ma non avevo il numero.I would have called you, but I didn't have the number.

Key Tip: Future-in-the-Past

A very common B1 use is the future-in-the-past: when a past-tense verb reports what someone said or thought would happen, Italian uses the condizionale passato. 'Ha detto che sarebbe arrivato alle otto' (He said he would arrive at eight). Compare with English where we often use 'would' — Italian mirrors this exactly with the condizionale passato.
