Use the present subjunctive after: (1) Verbs of wish/desire: volere che, desiderare che, preferire che. (2) Verbs of hope/fear: sperare che, temere che, avere paura che. (3) Verbs of opinion/doubt: pensare che, credere che, dubitare che, sembrare che. (4) Impersonal expressions: è necessario che, è importante che, bisogna che, è possibile che, è bene che, è strano che. (5) Conjunctions: affinché, sebbene, benché, nonostante, a meno che non, prima che, purché, perché (so that).
A key rule: when the main clause and subordinate clause have the SAME subject, use the infinitive (e.g., 'Voglio andare' — I want to go). When subjects are DIFFERENT, use 'che' + subjunctive (e.g., 'Voglio che lui vada' — I want him to go). Also remember that for -are verbs, the io/tu/lui forms all look the same (parl-i), so context determines the person.
