The passato remoto is a simple past tense formed with a single word (like English 'I spoke,' 'she went'). In Southern Italy and in literature, it is used for ALL past actions, including recent ones. In Northern Italy, it is reserved for historical or emotionally distant events, while everyday past events use the passato prossimo. At B1 level, you need to recognise and use it, especially for reading literature and formal texts.

Many high-frequency verbs are irregular in the passato remoto. The irregularities mainly affect the 1st person singular, 3rd person singular, and 3rd person plural (the so-called '1-3-3 pattern'). Learn the root and apply the irregular endings: -i, -sti, -e, -mmo, -ste, -ero.

Most irregular verbs in the passato remoto only change in the 1st person singular, 3rd person singular, and 3rd person plural. The other three persons (tu, noi, voi) are almost always regular. Example: scrivere → scrissi (io), scrivesti (tu), scrisse (lui), scrivemmo (noi), scriveste (voi), scrissero (loro). Learn the irregular root (scriss-) and the rest follows.
