Rule reminder
In extended discourse, condizionale passato can appear: in main clauses (result of a past hypothetical), in subordinate clauses after verbs of saying/thinking (reported speech), and in journalistic attribution. Always check the context carefully.
A: 'Mi dispiace, non potevo fare di più.' B: 'Capisco, ma qualcosa in più ___ (aiutare).'
