Rule reminder
In extended discourse, condizionale passato can appear: in main clauses (result of a past hypothetical), in subordinate clauses after verbs of saying/thinking (reported speech), and in journalistic attribution. Always check the context carefully.
A: 'Perché non sei venuto alla mia festa?' B: 'Non lo sapevo! ___ (venire) sicuramente.'
