Rule reminder

The condizionale and periodo ipotetico serve key pragmatic functions beyond pure grammar: (1) Regret: 'Se solo avessi ascoltato...' (If only I had listened...); (2) Criticism: 'Avresti potuto dirmelo!' (You could have told me!); (3) Polite advice: 'Al tuo posto, avrei fatto...' / 'Se fossi in te, farei...'; (4) Reproach: 'Come minimo, avresti dovuto avvisarmi.' These express emotional weight and social register simultaneously.
