Perifrasi Verbali — Verbal Periphrases·Passive Periphrases in Context: Action vs State
💡

Rule reminder

Context determines which passive to use: if describing WHAT SOMETHING LOOKS LIKE or ITS CURRENT CONDITION → 'essere + pp'; if describing WHAT SOMEONE DOES TO IT (habitual/repeated) → 'venire + pp'; if expressing WHAT MUST BE DONE → 'andare + pp'. Mistakes arise when confusing state (è chiuso) with action (viene chiuso) or obligation (va chiuso).
