Rule reminder
At the B2 mastery level, reported speech requires simultaneous management of: tense backshift across multiple clauses, journalistic condizionale, congiuntivo selection, pronoun and possessive shifts, deictic changes, reporting verb register, and optional backshift for timeless truths.
A courtroom: the prosecutor says the defendant told police: «Non ero lì quella sera.» The prosecutor reports: «L'imputato ha dichiarato alla polizia che non _____ lì quella sera.»
