Rule reminder

The participio passato assoluto can express a causal relationship ('since / because / given that'). Context determines whether the meaning is temporal or causal. Example: 'Perso l'autobus, decise di prendere un taxi' = 'Since he had missed the bus, he decided to take a taxi'. The absolute construction is more economical than the full subordinate clause.
