Italian word

capitare

to happen, to occur, to turn up, to find oneself (somewhere by chance)

Looks like

to capitulate

to surrender, to give in

⚠️ The trap

Nothing to do with capitulating. 'Capitare' = to happen by chance. 'È capitato un guaio' = 'A problem occurred'. 'Se capiti da queste parti' = 'If you happen to be in this area'. Very natural, common verb.

To say "to surrender, to give in" in Italian:

capitolare (for to capitulate)

"capitare" in English means:

to happen, to occur, to turn up, to find oneself (somewhere by chance)

Example

"Capita a tutti di sbagliare."

"It happens to everyone to make mistakes."
