⚠️ The trap
Cognizione and cognition overlap significantly. The Italian phrase 'con cognizione di causa' (with knowledge of the matter) is very common and has no tidy English equivalent — 'knowingly' or 'with full awareness' come close.
To say "the mental process of acquiring knowledge" in Italian:
cognizione (near-equivalent, but also means practical knowledge)
"cognizione" in English means:
knowledge, awareness, cognition
Example
"Ha parlato con cognizione di causa."
"She spoke with full knowledge of the facts."
