Can I leave a message?
Stress 'mes-SAG-gio'. 'Lasciare' = la-SHIA-re.
Use this when the person you called is unavailable and you want to leave information with whoever answered. Also use it for voicemail situations.
'Lasciare un messaggio' = to leave a message. 'Posso' = can I. This is a polite and common request when someone is not available. Italian offices often have a receptionist ('centralinista') who takes messages. Be prepared to dictate your name and number clearly.
