'Classe' — 'KLAS-se'. Two syllables; double 's'.
This is what the ticket agent will ask you — know your answer. You can also ask this yourself when buying at a machine and not sure which to select.
'Prima classe' (first class) offers wider seats, more space, and quieter carriages. 'Seconda classe' is the standard option and perfectly comfortable on Italian trains. The price difference is significant on long-distance trains.

On Italian 'Frecce' (high-speed trains) there are four classes: Standard, Premium, Business, and Executive. 'Business' on Frecciarossa is roughly equivalent to traditional first class and includes a reclining seat and light meal service.
