B1

Potete ridimensionare l'anello?

Can you resize the ring?

Pronunciation

'Ridimensionare' — ri-di-men-sio-NA-re. Six syllables.

When to use it

Ask when a ring fits but needs to be slightly larger or smaller, or when buying a ring as a gift. Most gold and silver rings can be resized by a skilled jeweller. Some designs (eternity rings) cannot.

What it means

'Ridimensionare' or 'aggiustare la misura' = to resize. 'Potete' (can you — plural) addresses the jeweller's shop. Resizing involves cutting the band and adding or removing metal, then rejoining. It is a standard service in Italian jewellery shops.

Variations

Potete ingrandirlo di mezza misura?

Can you enlarge it by half a size?

Specifies the direction and amount.

Potete restringerlo?

Can you make it smaller?

Opposite direction.

Quanto costa la ridimensionatura?

How much does resizing cost?

Cost question.

Mini Dialogue

Cliente: L'anello è bello ma è un po' largo. Potete ridimensionarlo? Gioielliere: Certo. Di quanto lo devo restringere? Cliente: Circa mezza misura — porto il diciassette. Gioielliere: Lo facciamo in due giorni — costa quindici euro.

Customer: The ring is beautiful but a bit large. Can you resize it? Jeweller: Of course. How much shall I make it smaller? Customer: About half a size — I take a seventeen. Jeweller: We'll do it in two days — it costs fifteen euros.

Cultural Note

Resizing is extremely common in Italian jewellery shops because rings are often bought as gifts without knowing the exact size. Italian jewellers can typically resize a gold ring in 24–48 hours. Silver is easier and faster. Platinum and titanium are harder to resize.
