Advanced cohesion in Italian essays uses: reference devices ('tale', 'ciò', 'quanto sopra esposto', 'il suddetto'), substitution, lexical repetition with variation, and a wide range of connectives. Beyond basic connectives: 'nondimeno' (nonetheless — literary), 'eppure' (yet — emphatic), 'peraltro' (moreover/on the other hand), 'invero' (indeed — literary), 'laddove' (whereas/where), 'sicché' (so that — consequence).
