Rule reminder

'Mentre' + imperfetto sets the background action (ongoing, not yet completed). A passato prossimo or passato remoto in the main or relative clause describes a specific event that interrupts or occurs during that background. Both can also be in imperfetto if two actions are equally ongoing and parallel.
