'Non appena' and 'appena' both mean 'as soon as'. They emphasize that the second action follows the first with no delay. In past contexts they take the passato prossimo or passato remoto; in future contexts they require the futuro semplice or futuro anteriore. Never use the subjunctive after 'non appena'.
