Rule reminder
'Mentre' (while) describes two simultaneous ongoing actions. In past contexts both verbs typically use the imperfetto, showing two parallel ongoing states or actions. 'Mentre' can also contrast a background action (imperfetto) with a sudden interrupting action (passato prossimo/remoto). Never use 'mentre' with the congiuntivo.
