Rule reminder
Use 'come se' + congiuntivo trapassato (avesse/fosse + past participle) when the unreal comparison refers to a past event that did not happen. The main verb is usually in the past tense. Example: Parlava come se avesse visto tutto. (He spoke as if he had seen everything — but he hadn't.)
Mi ha salutato come se non ci _____ mai incontrati.
