Rule reminder

Per + infinitive expresses cause in two ways: (1) Per + present infinitive = cause concurrent with or after the main action: 'È famoso per cantare bene' (he is famous for singing well). (2) Per + past infinitive (per + avere/essere + past participle) = cause prior to the main action: 'È stato punito per aver mentito' (he was punished for having lied). The subject of the infinitive must be the same as the main clause subject. Register: neutral to formal.
