Rule reminder

In literary and elevated written Italian, 'se' can be omitted and the verb inverted to create a conditional: 'Avesse vissuto più a lungo, avrebbe scritto altri capolavori' = 'Se avesse vissuto più a lungo...'. This structure uses congiuntivo trapassato in the protasis and condizionale passato in the apodosis. It appears in literature, essays, and formal speeches.
