Perifrasi Verbali — Verbal Periphrases·Finire di vs Smettere di: Subtle Distinctions
💡

Rule reminder

'Finire di + inf' = to finish doing (the action reaches its natural end/completion): 'Ho finito di mangiare' = I've finished eating (I ate the whole meal). 'Smettere di + inf' = to stop doing (the action is interrupted or abandoned, not necessarily completed): 'Ha smesso di fumare' = He stopped smoking (he gave it up). KEY: 'finire di' implies COMPLETION; 'smettere di' implies STOPPING (may not be complete). 'Smettere di' also works for habits given up.
