Italian journalism uses reported speech (discorso indiretto) with specific conventions: tense backshifting, attribution verbs (dichiarare, affermare, sottolineare, precisare, aggiungere), and frequency of source attribution. Direct quotes use «guillemets» in Italian print journalism. Partial quotes and paraphrase are also common strategies.
