Rule reminder
In longer narratives, an idiom must fit not just the immediate sentence but the entire arc: what happened before, what the speaker's emotional state is, what the consequence will be. An idiom that seems plausible in isolation may be wrong for the narrative context. Read the full story before choosing.
Per vent'anni, Giulio aveva lavorato come consulente per la stessa multinazionale. Non aveva mai rifiutato una richiesta, non aveva mai detto no a un progetto extra, non aveva mai preso tutte le sue ferie. Aveva rinunciato a notti, weekend, vacanze. Alla fine, si era davvero ___. Ma il riconoscimento non era mai arrivato.
