Rule reminder
In longer narratives, an idiom must fit not just the immediate sentence but the entire arc: what happened before, what the speaker's emotional state is, what the consequence will be. An idiom that seems plausible in isolation may be wrong for the narrative context. Read the full story before choosing.
La negoziazione era bloccata da quattro mesi. Ogni incontro finiva con un nulla di fatto. I legali giravano in tondo sugli stessi punti. Il mediatore dichiarò: 'Questa trattativa si trova in ___. Dobbiamo cambiare approccio completamente.'
