Academic reported speech in Italian uses: 1) verbs like asserire, sostenere, argomentare, ipotizzare, dimostrare, confutare; 2) the indicative is often preferred over subjunctive in academic citation; 3) infinitive constructions ('secondo X, il fenomeno sembra essere...'); 4) nominalization ('l'affermazione di X secondo cui...').
