Rule reminder
Academic Italian (Italian for research papers, dissertations, scientific reports) makes extensive use of absolute constructions to create a formal, impersonal register. Common patterns: 'Analizzati i dati, si può concludere che…' (Once the data have been analysed, one can conclude that…), 'Esaminata la letteratura, emerge che…' (Having examined the literature, it emerges that…), 'Condotte le interviste, i risultati mostrano che…' (Once the interviews were conducted, the results show that…). The absolute allows the researcher to describe methodological steps efficiently while maintaining the impersonal academic tone.
In a dissertation abstract: 'Esaminate le principali teorie sull'apprendimento linguistico, vengono discusse le implicazioni pedagogiche.' What style feature does the absolute construction contribute?
