A past participle can function in two very different ways: (1) As an attributive adjective inside a noun phrase: 'La porta aperta dava sul corridoio.' Here 'aperta' describes the door's state — it is part of the noun phrase 'la porta aperta'. (2) As the head of an absolute construction: 'Aperta la porta, il commissario entrò.' Here 'aperta' forms an independent participial clause with its own subject 'la porta', expressing an action completed before the main event. Key diagnostic clues: word order (participle before noun in absolutes), comma, and whether the participle's noun is the subject of the main verb or an independent participant.
