Rule reminder

Concessive absolute constructions express 'even though' or 'despite'. The most common type uses 'pur' + present gerund: 'Pur essendo stanco, continuò a lavorare.' (Even though he was tired, he kept working.) A pure participial concessive absolute also exists in formal Italian: 'Pur ammessa la difficoltà del compito, non ci si può arrendere.' Additionally, some past-participle absolutes carry an implicit concessive meaning based on context: 'Conosciuti i rischi, accettò ugualmente.' (Even knowing the risks, he accepted.) Concessive absolutes contrast with temporal absolutes — identifying which meaning is intended requires careful attention to context.
