At mastery level, connective choice requires simultaneous attention to: logical function (what relationship?), register (which level of formality?), syntax (conjunction or adverb? indicative or subjunctive?), and discourse structure (where in the argument are we?). There is often more than one grammatically possible answer — choose the BEST one for the full context.
