Rule reminder

ANAPHORA refers back to something previously mentioned: 'Ho comprato un libro. L'ho letto.' — 'l'' refers back to 'libro'. CATAPHORA refers forward to something not yet mentioned: 'È questo il problema: manca il denaro.' — 'questo' anticipates 'manca il denaro'. Cataphora creates suspense and emphasis; anaphora maintains cohesion. Both are essential cohesion devices in Italian.
