Periodo Ipotetico della Realtà (Type 1)

The Lesson

What is the Periodo Ipotetico della Realtà?

The periodo ipotetico della realtà (Type 1 conditional) describes real, possible, or likely conditions. The situation described is possible and the speaker considers it a realistic scenario. It follows the pattern: Se + present indicative → present indicative / future / imperative.

Type 1 Conditional Structure

ClauseTenseExample
Se (if) clausePresente indicativoSe hai fame...
Result clause (option 1)Presente indicativo...mangi qualcosa.
Result clause (option 2)Futuro semplice...mangerai qualcosa.
Result clause (option 3)Imperativo...mangia qualcosa!
Result clause (option 4)Puoi + infinito...puoi mangiare qualcosa.

Basic Examples

  • Se hai fame, mangia qualcosa. If you are hungry, eat something. (present + imperative)
  • Se fa caldo, apriamo la finestra. If it's hot, we open the window. (present + present)
  • Se studia, passerà l'esame. If he studies, he will pass the exam. (present + future)
  • Se hai bisogno, puoi chiamarmi. If you need help, you can call me. (present + puoi)
  • Se arrivi tardi, ti aspetto. If you arrive late, I'll wait for you. (present + present)
  • Se piove, prenderemo un taxi.If it rains, we'll take a taxi. (present + future)

Key Points

Important notes about Type 1 conditionals: 1. The 'se' clause always uses the PRESENT INDICATIVE (never the future or subjunctive in standard Italian). 2. The result clause can use: present indicative (general truths/habits), future (likely outcomes), or imperative (commands/suggestions). 3. The order of clauses can be reversed: the result clause can come first, and 'se' clause second: 'Mangerai qualcosa se hai fame.' 4. This type expresses: real possibilities, general truths, plans, suggestions.

Type 1 vs Type 2 vs Type 3

Reversed Order Examples

  • Apriamo la finestra se fa caldo. We open the window if it's hot.
  • Chiamami se hai bisogno.Call me if you need help.
  • Prenderemo un taxi se piove. We'll take a taxi if it rains.
  • Mangiamo qualcosa se hai fame.Let's eat something if you're hungry.

Common Patterns

Se clause (present)Result clauseUse
Se + present+ presentGeneral truth, habit
Se + present+ futureLikely future outcome
Se + present+ imperativeAdvice, suggestion, command
Se + present+ puoi/devi/vuoi + inf.Permission, obligation, desire
Se + present+ è meglio che + congiuntivoAdvice with subjunctive in result

Remember

In Italian, you CANNOT use the future tense in the 'se' clause (unlike English 'if'). Never say 'Se farà bello...' — say 'Se fa bello...'. The 'se' clause uses present indicative even when referring to future events. This is different from English, where 'if' can be followed by either present or future depending on context.
