The congiuntivo imperfetto (imperfect subjunctive) is used in subordinate clauses when the main verb is in the past tense or conditional. It expresses wishes, doubts, possibilities, and hypotheses referring to a past or simultaneous action. It is triggered by the same verbs and conjunctions as the congiuntivo presente, but the sequence of tenses shifts to the past.

Use the congiuntivo imperfetto when the main verb is in the past tense (imperfetto, passato prossimo, passato remoto) or in the conditional (vorrei, sarebbe meglio). Common triggers: voleva che, speravo che, vorrei che, sarebbe meglio che, credevo che, dubitavo che, era necessario che. Also used after 'se' in hypothetical sentences (tipo 2): Se parlassi italiano, potrei viaggiare.
A useful rule: if the main verb is present/future → use congiuntivo presente. If the main verb is past/conditional → use congiuntivo imperfetto. Example: 'Voglio che tu venga' (present trigger → congiuntivo presente) vs 'Volevo che tu venissi' (past trigger → congiuntivo imperfetto).
