Italian word

statale

state road (Strada Statale / SS) — main road maintained by the state

Looks like

state / statale

state = a country or political entity

⚠️ The trap

On Italian road signs you'll see 'SS14' or similar. 'Statale' just means it's a national A-road. English 'state road' in the US is a similar concept but the signage and scale differ.

To say "state = a country or political entity" in Italian:

Strada Statale (SS)

"statale" in English means:

state road (Strada Statale / SS) — main road maintained by the state

Example

"Seguiamo la statale fino a Salerno."

"We follow the main state road to Salerno."
