⚠️ The trap
In English 'professor' implies university level. In Italian 'professore/professoressa' is the standard title for any secondary-school teacher. When you are 13 and in middle school, your teacher is 'il professore'. It is NOT restricted to university.
To say "a university faculty member, usually tenured" in Italian:
professore (used for all teachers from middle school upwards)
"professore" in English means:
teacher (secondary school or university); professor
Example
"La nostra professoressa di matematica è bravissima."
"Our maths teacher is excellent."
