Italian word

parente

relative, family member

Looks like

parent

mother or father

⚠️ The trap

If you say 'I miei parenti vengono a cena' you mean 'My relatives are coming to dinner', not just your parents. For mother and father use 'i miei genitori' (my parents).

To say "mother or father" in Italian:

genitore (for parent/mother-father)

"parente" in English means:

relative, family member

Example

"Ho molti parenti in Sicilia — zii, cugini, nonni."

"I have many relatives in Sicily — aunts/uncles, cousins, grandparents."
