Italian word

ordinario

ordinary, average; also: full professor (university)

Looks like

ordinary

normal, not special

⚠️ The trap

In everyday use it means 'ordinary/average', same as English. However, in academic contexts 'professore ordinario' is the highest rank — a full tenured professor. English speakers would assume 'ordinary professor' means average, but in Italian academia it is the top rank.

To say "normal, not special" in Italian:

ordinario (correct for ordinary); professore ordinario (full professor)

"ordinario" in English means:

ordinary, average; also: full professor (university)

Example

"È un professore ordinario all'Università di Bologna."

"He is a full professor at the University of Bologna."
