Italian word
difensore
a defence lawyer; a defender
Looks like
defender
one who defends; in sports, a defensive player
⚠️ The trap
In legal contexts 'difensore' works perfectly as 'defence counsel'. The risk is using it in a non-legal context — in football, 'difensore' is also the standard term for a defender, which creates no confusion. The trap is the reverse: English speakers may not realise Italian lawyers are specifically 'difensori'.
To say "one who defends; in sports, a defensive player" in Italian:
difensore
"difensore" in English means:
a defence lawyer; a defender
Example
"Il difensore ha chiesto l'assoluzione del suo cliente."
"The defence counsel requested his client's acquittal."
