⚠️ The trap
'Baccalà' sounds like 'balcony' to some English speakers. They are unrelated. 'Baccalà' is salt cod — it must be soaked in water for 24-48 hours before cooking to remove the salt. It is different from 'stoccafisso' (air-dried, not salted cod), though the two are often confused even by Italians.
To say "a balcony is an outdoor platform on a building" in Italian:
baccalà (salt cod) / stoccafisso (stockfish = air-dried cod)
"baccalà" in English means:
salt cod (dried and salted codfish)
Example
"Il baccalà alla vicentina è un piatto tipico veneto."
"Baccalà alla Vicentina is a typical Venetian dish."
