Megghiu n'omu sulu ca malamenti accumpagnatu

Better a man alone than badly accompanied — solitude is preferable to bad company. The wrong companions are worse than no companions, because they actively damage rather than merely fail to help. Know your own worth enough to choose aloneness over harmful associations.

The Story Behind It

The Sicilian evaluation of company was exacting because the consequences of wrong associations were severe. Being seen with the wrong person in the wrong neighbourhood could damage your reputation; sharing a business with the wrong partner could ruin you; marrying into the wrong family could affect your children's prospects for a generation. The proverb was therefore not merely social wisdom but practical self-defence. It countered the fear of solitude — which was real in a culture where isolation was unusual and somewhat suspect — by insisting that the quality of company mattered more than its mere presence. It was offered to those about to make compromises, those who were choosing bad relationships because they feared being alone, those who were keeping dangerous friendships because they could not bear the emptiness of their absence.

A Sicilian proverb about the active harm of bad company versus the merely passive difficulty of solitude. 'Megghiu' = meglio (better), 'malamenti accumpagnatu' = mal accompagnato (badly accompanied). Widely used as social and relational advice across all of Sicily.
