Bon sangue no mentis

Good blood does not lie — character is inherited and reveals itself. A person from a good family will show it in their actions; quality of origin always emerges.

The Story Behind It

This proverb reflects the aristocratic and bourgeois assumptions of pre-industrial Lombardy, where birth determined destiny to a large degree. In the great industrial families of Milan — the Pirelli, the Falck, the Crespi — business acumen and ethical standards were believed to pass from father to son along with the business itself. The proverb has a positive face (the child of an honest man will be honest) and a darker implication (the child of a criminal will be criminal). In contemporary usage it has lost its aristocratic connotation and is used more broadly to mean that quality — of character, of craft, of judgment — tends to reproduce itself across generations. It is often cited to explain why certain families consistently produce talented individuals in a field.

Pan-Italian proverb deeply embedded in Lombard bourgeois culture. Reflects the importance of family reputation in a city where business relationships extended across generations.
