Cavalo che trota no ingràssa

A trotting horse does not get fat — the busy person does not accumulate fat (wealth, rest, comfort). Constant work keeps you lean but prevents the accumulation that comes from stillness.

The Story Behind It

The horse was the engine of Lombard agriculture and commerce until the twentieth century. Draft horses pulled the plows across the Po Plain; lighter trotting horses carried merchants and their goods along the Roman roads. A working horse, kept constantly in motion, did not put on weight — it burned its feed in effort. The proverb became a metaphor for the experience of the diligent worker: always busy, always producing, but never quite accumulating enough to stop. There is a gentle melancholy in the saying: the honest worker who never rests rarely gets rich. It is the entrepreneur who delegates, who steps back, who lets the machine run without him who actually builds wealth. The trotting horse knows how to work but not how to stop and graze.

Lombard agricultural proverb from the horse-working culture of the Po Plain. Reflects the paradox of the diligent worker who accumulates nothing because he never stops moving.
