Before taking photographs inside any Italian church. Rules vary considerably — some churches forbid all photography, others permit it without flash.
Si possono fare means can one take (impersonal). Fotografie is the plural. All'interno means inside. Photography rules are posted at the entrance of most churches — when not clear, ask before raising your camera.
Posso fotografare i dipinti?
Can I photograph the paintings?
Asking specifically about painting photography.
Il flash è vietato?
Is flash forbidden?
Flash is almost universally banned in Italian churches.
Posso fotografare durante la messa?
Can I photograph during mass?
Photography during services is generally inappropriate and often banned.
The Sistine Chapel absolutely prohibits photography (though this is widely ignored). Many Italian churches have invested in infrared sensors that detect camera flashes and sound alarms. The no-photography rule in chapels is partly about protecting ancient pigments from flash damage and partly about maintaining a devotional atmosphere.
