When does the last metro come?
'Ultimo' — UL-ti-mo. Stress on the first syllable; this is a proparoxytone (stress three syllables from end).
Ask this when out late and not sure whether the metro is still running. Metro closing times in Italian cities are earlier than in cities like London or New York.
'Quando passa' uses 'passare' (to pass/come by), the natural verb for vehicles on a route. 'L'ultimo' is the definite article + superlative adjective. The opposite question is 'Quando parte il primo metro?' (When does the first metro leave?).
A che ora chiude la metro?
At what time does the metro close?
Asks about closing time rather than last departure.
Il metro è ancora aperto?
Is the metro still open?
Simple yes/no check before heading to the station.
Ho perso l'ultimo treno?
Have I missed the last train?
Use if you suspect you are already too late.
Rome's metro closes around 11:30pm on weekdays and 1:30am on Fridays and Saturdays. Milan's metro runs until around 12:30am most nights. Neither city has 24-hour metro service, unlike London's Night Tube.
