Always ask for diamonds and coloured gemstones of significant value. A certificate from an independent gemmological laboratory is the only objective proof of a stone's quality grade.
'Certificati della pietra' = stone certificates. The most trusted lab certifications: GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemological Institute — based partly in Antwerp), HRD (Belgian lab). An IGI certificate from Italy is internationally recognised.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) was introduced in 2003 to prevent 'conflict diamonds' from entering the market. Italian jewellers who are members of Federorafi adhere to this scheme. Asking about ethical sourcing is increasingly common and respected.
