Rule reminder
Cleft sentences can appear in questions: 'È davvero Marco che ha telefonato?' (Is it really Marco who called?). The structure mirrors affirmative clefts but the intonation (spoken) or context (written) signals a question. Interrogative clefts are used to ask for confirmation, to express surprise, or to narrow down who/what/when/where. They can be combined with question words: 'Chi è che ha chiamato?' (Who is it that called?).
