Rule reminder

Absolute constructions can also express a concessive meaning ('although', 'even though', 'despite'): 'Pur essendo già tardi, continuarono a lavorare.' In formal literary Italian, the participio passato assoluto can also have a concessive nuance: 'Vinta la battaglia, la guerra era tutt'altro che finita.'
