Rule reminder

The subjunctive can be used in independent clauses (without a main clause) to express: wishes (Che tu possa farcela!), curses or strong feelings (Che vada al diavolo!), regrets (Fossi rimasto a casa!), polite requests or exhortations (Si accomodi!), and doubt in rhetorical questions (Che sia davvero lui?). These are survival patterns in formal and literary Italian.
