In indirect speech (discorso indiretto), the subjunctive is often used in literary and formal Italian when the main verb expresses doubt, opinion, or emotion: 'Ha detto che partisse subito' (literary) vs 'Ha detto che è partito' (factual report). Indirect questions after verbs like 'chiedere', 'domandare', 'non sapere' can use subjunctive in elevated registers.
