Verbs and expressions of emotion, surprise, fear, regret, happiness, and personal judgment always trigger the subjunctive: essere contento/felice/triste/arrabbiato che, dispiacere che, sorprendere che, preoccupare che, vergognarsi che, essere fiero/orgoglioso che, spiacere che, stupire che. The tense follows normal sequence-of-tenses rules.
