Regular -ere verbs are the second most common group of Italian verbs. To conjugate them in the present tense, remove the infinitive ending -ere to get the stem, then add the appropriate personal ending. For example: leggere → stem legg- → leggo, leggi, legge, leggiamo, leggete, leggono.
| Person | Ending | leggere example |
|---|---|---|
| io | -o | leggo |
| tu | -i | leggi |
| lui / lei | -e | legge |
| noi | -iamo | leggiamo |
| voi | -ete | leggete |
| loro | -ono | leggono |
| Person | -are (parlare) | -ere (leggere) |
|---|---|---|
| io | parlo | leggo |
| tu | parli | leggi |
| lui / lei | parla | legge |
| noi | parliamo | leggiamo |
| voi | parlate | leggete |
| loro | parlano | leggono |
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| leggere | to read |
| scrivere | to write |
| prendere | to take |
| rispondere | to answer |
| vivere | to live |
| credere | to believe |
| vendere | to sell |
| mettere | to put |
The three endings that differ between -are and -ere verbs are: lui/lei (-are → -a as in parla; -ere → -e as in legge), voi (-are → -ate as in parlate; -ere → -ete as in leggete), and loro (-are → -ano as in parlano; -ere → -ono as in leggono). The io, tu, and noi endings (-o, -i, -iamo) look identical across both groups, so context helps distinguish them.
